PHIL COLLINS ISOLATED BASS COVER

Bass Tone!!!

I’m stoked of the success of this cover on Bass The World and Warwick Basses offical YouTube channels. This drove me even further to showcase my audio engineering with another isolated bass release.

The outro tapping parts and fills that I’ve added took me a while to finalise as they are not only based on “feel”, but “theoretic musicality” also.

The next step will be to tab this out musically and have a downloadable manuscript version.

I spent some time and must have listened to twenty bounces before I realised that any form of reamping was never going to cut it. I tried through my Cali 76, Styrmon, and Mesa Boogie pedals.

Naturally my knowledge, taste, and experience have developed in the five years since recording this. Mixes have a tendency to make things sound good together, but other times not as desirable on their own. A great solo tone is not always guaranteed to work well in a mix so this was a beneficial learning process for me. I reached out to my mix engineer Dylan and explained that I wanted some low mid cut, and some general mid boosting from a pull-tech eq. I also wanted the enhancing ‘live and zest’ feeling from the LA-2A levelling amp. This helps glue things together like an old tape machine and gives a less “direct” DI Sound.

I didn’t mind spending the time attempting to reamp as these are valuable learning experiences which aid my knowledge in audio production. Just because I know what I’m reaching for doesn’t always mean it happens instantaneously.

I’m glad that im able to successfully release the isolated bass tone audio, this showcases my desire to reproduce audio and tone as best as I possibly can.

The original “How I Got That Sound” tone video can be viewed here.

It’s recorded in 48k and I have put my all into the writing, playing, tone, and the delivery of this video as a whole.

I hope you enjoy it and can take something from this.
