MY BASS PLAYTHROUGH OF CRIME SCENE - MAMMAL

Crime scene!!!

The first single recorded and released since joining Mammal.

Playing in an original band again is something I’ve welcomed with open arms. The energy and musicianship (in my opinion) are all on point.

In the writing stage, this track was originally called “We The People”.

It was a nice surprise the first time we heard Zeke’s new lyrics and learned it was now called “Crime Scene”. I was stoked to hear the chants in the outro.

Most songs start out with jam riffs, this was no different. It was an experimental and teething process for me. I like the that I’m aloud to play non-verbatim and write my own bass parts. This is a big part of the bands sound prior to my joining and is one aspect I think that drives the band.

Once we had jammed it out and settled on a structure I went down to Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne to watch Zane track drums. This is where I was first introduced to producer Jimi Maroudas.

Zane moves like lightning and this was incredible to witness. I had to lay down a rough guide track of the song, I only roughly knew my parts and was a little nervous in front of the band and Jimi.

In the chorus I left some space with the open notes because of Pete’s faster guitar picking on the Gibson. The verses are my take on adding a slap-triplet-pluck, whilst driving the groove with the drums.

Recording the bass was epic. I worked with Dylan mitrovich to achieve the high-mid driven bass tone that I wanted. We used my Mesa boogie DI, and Avalon DI, a Giles Audio DI, and captured the cab and room sound of my Mesa Boogie bass rig with a U87 microphone.

Mixing this track with Jimi was a pleasure. He was extremely accomodating to my personal bass preference is a true compassionate engineer.

I hope you enjoy it and can take something from this.
