INCUBUS STELLAR - HOW I GOT THAT BASS TONE BASS TONE

📸 - Melbourne, Novemeber 18, 2019

G’day Legends! I’m stoked to be delivering this video.

What started as a conversation with my friends Adam (drums) and Christian (guitar) about doing an Incubus cover, led to the creation of this.

I’ve played with Adam in bands and worked on many stages with him, so jamming was quite familiar. Christian we’d actually spent time writing and studying in the studio together. He also helped me immensely with preparing for some corporate and wedding shows through 2016/2017. Christian is si versed he spent time dialing in sounds before the day, this makes my job much easier. Ben (vocals) is also a friend who I’ve gigged with, although none of us had ever actually played together before.

I knew exactly what tone I wanted for this track: nice clean Warwick, Avalon DI, pedalboard blend.

I went through my board first, as opposed to running directly into the Avalon U5. I coloured and compressed my signal with a Darkglass SS and Sansamp BDDI, them ran direct from there. I took recordings from the Avalon U5 and my Mark Bass Cab. If you’re able to understand your gear, you can have a fair idea of what sound you’re going for prior to the recording itself. This can save painful time-wasting in the studio, especially when there is a whole band to capture. Great tone, even and not over-compressed.

Matt Bartlem has done amazingly well mixing this track.

This tone was relatively easy to achieve. This bass is special and rarely disappoints in a live or studio setting.

I love Dirk Lance’s playing; he commented on this cover on Instagram, and having the original creator comment positively really made my day.

You can view the video here.

I really hope you enjoy it.

Onwards and upwards,

Kade
