WILD CHERRY - PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC - BASS COVER
📸 - Melbourne, December 07, 2017
G’day Legends! I’m stoked to be delivering this video.
I’ve performed this song at many weddings and corporate events, so I decided to put together a studio-style version that incorporates some of my favourite live fills to showcase over the top of the cover. This arrangement is packed with a range of techniques, with a strong focus on slap and pop playing. It shows the potential of writing over cover songs with creativity using theory and technique.
I had endless riffs and ideas I wanted to compile into one huge take. This took a really long time to remember and arrange every part so it would flow. If you listen carefully, they’re all slightly different.
I initially recorded this version with a session bassist behind the controls near where I was living at the time. But being me, I wasn’t happy with my playing or articulation. I needed to practice and tighten everything up until it felt right and met my standards.
I wanted a specific and original tone for this cover. I’m using my beautiful Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling 2001 Bass, with Ernie Ball slinky 45/105 strings in standard tuning. The signal chain is as follows: Bass direct into my Avalon U5 DI - Sansamp Bass Driver DI. We re-amped though my Mark Bass amp and cab, and captured it with a Steve Slate Digital Mic. Just to be sure I created something original, we then re-amped again through a Mesa Boogie Subway DI bass pedal.
I loved playing on this, and it was a real test for me to be physically able to get through this track.

I really hope you enjoy it.
Onwards and upwards,
